This is a post-qualification CPD training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy skills that equates to 36 hours’ CPD. This part-time structured programme of 6 days taught over 3 weekends across approximately three months allows participants to practise the CBT techniques between each course module. This course is not designed for anyone who wishes to train as a CBT therapist from scratch. Rather, it is additional training in how to use CBT, tailored for therapists who are already qualified and practising in another modality.

This course is approved by COSRT (the College of Sex and Relationship Therapy) for 36 hours of CPD. This CPD approval by COSRT gives quality assurance of relevance of the material to the practice of sex and relationship therapy.
Certificate in CBT Skills
Dates: 3 weekends, 6 days in total, Autumn and Spring (see below). Time: 10:00am – 5:00pm

Fees: £800 + VAT = £960 payable in full before the start date or by instalments as long as the total is reached before the final weekend of the course. A fee reduction may be available depending on student circumstances, ask for details. The course fee includes all training materials and the CPD certificate. Tea, coffee, water, biscuits, fruit are provided during the day. Lunch is not included in the course fee. Shops and cafes are nearby.

This training provides an opportunity for qualified practitioners to integrate CBT concepts and techniques with existing theoretical background and way of working and to obtain a Certificate in CBT Skills. The course was initially set up to meet the needs of qualified therapists or practitioners, who wish to make a bridge between CBT methods with their existing practice. The training covers NICE recommended interventions and follows the CBT competence framework developed for the IAPT programme. The course consists of theoretical and experiential components, as well as exercises in skills practice. The didactic tutor input encourages critical engagement with CBT theory and its application in clinical practice. All students will receive course handouts along with any additional materials provided as the programme progresses. This is a post-qualification CPD training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy skills that equates to 36 hours’ CPD endorsed by COSRT. Participants who complete this course can verify that they are CBT-trained. Whereas it’s necessary to take a full training over several years to achieve the status of a fully-certified CBT therapist according to the requirements of BABCP membership. Although the course content is recognised by BABCP (since the tutor is a trainer accredited by BABCP), this CPD programme is not of itself a route to BABCP membership or BABCP accreditation – which takes a number of years of study and supervised practice.

The course is designed to enable participants to adopt a cognitive behavioural approach in an ethical way that is appropriate for working with clients who are experiencing common mental health concerns. CBT focuses on thought processes and emotional responses, which may have developed into distorted judgements, leading to rigid thinking and consequential behaviours. This course will introduce participants to the CBT model and will cover basic CBT skills and strategies for client work. The course is integrative and intentionally multi-modal. It is taught at postgraduate level; course participants are expected to work academically on this basis. This includes the ability to evaluate theoretical concepts and a commitment to reflect critically and open-mindedly on one’s own process, philosophy, theoretical orientation and skills. Discussion in the full group or smaller groups is as important as the tutor-taught components. The experiential process of development encourages participants to learn from one another as well as from the course tutors. The integrative philosophy underpinning this course fosters a multidisciplinary environment where theoretical differences and similarities are creatively valued. The course philosophy aims to establish a learning community in which a working alliance is established which encourages participants to take responsibility for their own learning and to support the learning of other course members.
The course includes theoretical teaching, as well as group discussion of concepts, case discussion and skills practice. Over the 6 taught days, the basic concepts of CBT will be introduced, with attention paid to integrating CBT in the individual’s practice. Particular techniques will be emphasised in therapeutic contact, which facilitate change in cognitive therapy. Course participants will have the opportunity to use Socratic questioning to prompt change, in addition to the use of action-based strategies including the design of “homework” and behavioural experimentation to supplement the CBT sessions. Students will be shown how to undertake conceptualisation work in order to produce a formulation of a cognitive therapy case. The following will be explored:
- Basic concepts of CBT
- Assessment and case conceptualisation with CBT
- Formulation of the identified problem, goal-focus and review process
- Integrating CBT techniques into everyday practice
- Use of Socratic questioning, “homework”, behavioural experimentation
- Common psychological problems for which CBT can be helpful
- Use of CBT in private practice and organisational / NHS settings
- Working with CBT in a time-limited structure
- Managing CBT: practical situations and incomplete or sub-optimal interventions
This course is explicitly multi-modal, so our focus of the teaching is on participants synthesising their own model of CBT practice, taking into account their existing theoretical background and way of working. The course is also multi-disciplinary in orientation, allowing for the varied contexts in which CBT may be practised.
Assessment & Certificate
In order to receive the post-qualification Certificate in CBT Skills, participants are required to attend all 6 days of the taught programme satisfactorily and to have paid their fees in full. A CPD certificate of attendance will be given to any student who is present for less than 6 days. The course is participative, experiential and discursive in nature, so informal assessment during the course is through self-analysis and group discussion. There is no requirement for any written work. If the tutor has any concerns regarding a student’s ability to assimilate CBT concepts and techniques into their practice, this will be discussed with the student in the first instance.
Participants are eligible for membership of BABCP (British Association of Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapists), subject to the criteria applicable to the grade of membership for which the participant is applying. Holding this Certificate in CBT Skills is evidence of the practitioner being CBT-trained and adopting a Cognitive Behavioural Approach (CBA). Referring to oneself as a CBT therapist or CBT practitioner requires CBT supervision and a more extensive training.
Dr. Michael Worrell Michael is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years experience in a range of practice settings including the NHS and Private Practice. His NHS experience has included work across primary and secondary care with adult clients presenting with moderate to severe and complex difficulties. He is accredited with the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) as a CBT Practitioner, Trainer and Supervisor. Since 2003 Michael has been involved in training a wide range of mental health practitioners (including counsellors, psychotherapists, clinical and counselling psychologists, psychiatrists, occupational therapists and psychiatric nurses) in CBT. Additionally, Michael has delivered training both within the UK and internationally on CBT Supervision and is currently developing further training in this area. In addition to his work within CBT, Michael has completed an advanced training in Existential Psychotherapy (1997) as well as a PhD in Psychotherapy (City 2002) that focused upon the concept of ‘resistance’ across differing modalities of therapy. Michael maintains a strong interest in contemporary developments in CBT and has completed training in both Schema Focused Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Michael has previously worked at Regent’s College London as a Programme Leader on what was then the Diploma in Existential Psychotherapy and also as External Examiner for the MA in Psychotherapy. Michael is committed the possibilities of dialogue between differing orientations to practice and is currently working on a project with Professor Ernesto Spinelli on developing an ‘Existentially Focussed CBT’. Some of this initial work was presented to the World Conference for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in Italy (2011) in a paper entitled “Existential Dimensions of ACT”. Michael has published in peer reviewed journals on both aspects of CBT and Existential Therapy.
Who is this course for
The teaching philosophy is integrative. As such practitioners representing a wide range of theoretical orientations are invited to apply. The focus is on core CBT competences applicable in therapeutic work. The programme is designed for counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists, social workers, nurse managers, occupational therapists, psychologists, therapeutic community managers and case workers in organisational settings. Application criteria: Applicants are expected to be qualified and experienced practitioners in a helping profession, who are secure in their existing mode of practice. Specifically applicants would:
- be qualified and experienced counsellors or psychotherapists, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, key workers or nurses,
- be full members of their professional body (BACP, UKCP, AHPP, BPS etc),
- hold professional liability insurance,
- have supervision arrangements in place.

For me the course was a very good introduction to CBT.
